Councilman Joe Buscaino asked the Department of Recreation and Parks Board of Commissioners to acquire property at 845 N. Sandford Ave in Wilmington for the development of a new sports field, in a motion introduced during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The 2.4 acre parcel is owned by Union Pacific Railroad, which has offered to donate the property at no-cost. Previous negotiations had been hindered by legal concerns over environmental cleanup of the industrial site, but procurement of an Environmental Pollution Insurance Policy on the site will protect the City from unanticipated future costs.

Funds from the proposed sports field will come primarily from Prop K and Prop 40.
